Congratulations to Katelyn Robinson and Thomas Kozar who were selected as 2015 FIRST® Tech Challenge Dean’s List Award Finalists. Katelyn and Thomas were recognized by Dean Kamen, Founder of FIRST®, and Megan Smith, U.S. Chief Technology Officer, at this year’s FTC World Championship in St. Louis, MO. The Dean’s List Award recognizes the leadership and dedication of FIRST’s most outstanding secondary school students. Dean’s List Award winners demonstrate a commitment to and passion for the ideals of FIRST®, are individual contributors and leaders of their team, and exude creativity, technical expertise, and entrepreneurship. Katelyn, a Junior from Birmingham, Alabama, is a member of the FTC Team #7022 Robostangs and Thomas, a Junior from Huntsville, Alabama, is a member of FTC Team #5096 Monkey Madness.
We would like to share with you recent FIRST® recognition at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference in Seattle, WA.  ASEE is a relatively new FIRST Strategic Alliance but is one who shares our mission for promoting engineering and technology education/careers.  The current President, Nick Altiero, is an avidFIRST supporter in Louisiana and is actively involved in the Bayou Regional planning committee.

Immediately following the plenary address by Harvey Mudd College President Maria Klawe, a noted mathematician and champion of diversity session, ASEE President Nicholas Altiero presented the 2015 ASEE President’s Award to FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), the international robotics program, for its innovative use of print, broadcast, or electronic media to encourage K-12 students to pursue engineering careers.  The award was accepted by FIRST Distinguished Advisor and Pappalardo Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology Dr. Woodie Flowers.

Ben Allen and Daniel Daugherty have been on the same robotics team, Monkey Madness, since they were in elementary school. They began over 8 years ago in FLL and then progressed into FTC when they started high school. They have had two amazing coaches, Mr. Kim Daugherty and Mrs. Renee Kozar guide them to win many state, national and international competitions. Starting out as elementary students, the two of them have learned the benefits early-on about hard work, dedication and determination. Winning the FTC World Championship in 2013 was an amazing experience for Ben and Daniel.
